How to Calculate a Tip

The tip formula is simple: tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100, and total = bill + tip. A 20% tip on a $45 bill is 45 × 20 ÷ 100 = $9.00, for a total of $54.00. To split it, divide the total by the number of people.

How to calculate the tip percentage: divide the tip by the bill and multiply by 100. Leaving $12 on a $60 bill is 12 ÷ 60 × 100 = 20%.

Quick ways to calculate a tip in your head

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place left. $64.50 → $6.45.
  • 20%: double the 10% figure. $6.45 × 2 = $12.90.
  • 15%: 10% plus half of it. $6.45 + $3.23 ≈ $9.68.
  • 18%: 20% minus 2% (a fifth of 10%). $12.90 − $1.29 ≈ $11.61.
  • 25%: divide the bill by 4. $64.50 ÷ 4 ≈ $16.13.

How Much to Tip in the US

How much to tip a hairdresser or barber

Tip 15–20% of the service price. On a $60 haircut that's $9–12; on a $200 color and cut it's $30–40. If several people worked on your hair (a stylist and a shampoo assistant), ask the salon to split the tip between them. For a stylist you see regularly, a holiday tip of about the cost of one visit is customary. Full guide: how much to tip a hairdresser or barber →

How much to tip at a nail salon (manicure or pedicure)

The same 15–20% applies: a $45 pedicure deserves a $7–9 tip, and a $30 manicure $4.50–6. Tip on the full price even if you used a coupon or package deal. Full guide: how much to tip at a nail salon →

How much to tip an Uber, Lyft or taxi driver

Tip 15–20% of the fare, with a minimum of about $1, and add $1–2 per bag if the driver helps with luggage. For a $25 ride, $4–5 is a good tip. In the Uber and Lyft apps you can add the tip after the ride.

How much to tip for food delivery (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart, pizza)

Etiquette guides suggest 10–15% of the order, and many people now tip 15–20% on app orders, with at least $3–5 per delivery. Tip more for bad weather, long distances, heavy grocery orders or stairs. For pizza delivery, $2–5 depending on the size of the order is standard. The Delivery preset in the calculator applies a $5 minimum automatically.

How much to tip hotel housekeeping

Leave $2–5 per day, every day rather than at the end of your stay (staff can change between days), with a note marked "Housekeeping – thank you" so it's clear the money is for them. Leave more for suites, extra mess or special requests.

House cleaners, dog groomers and other regular services

For a one-time house cleaning or grooming appointment, 15–20% of the price is a common tip. For people who serve you regularly (a weekly cleaner, a dog groomer, a massage therapist), the Emily Post Institute's holiday guidance is a year-end tip of about the cost of one visit. Full guide: how much to tip a dog groomer →

Why tip at all? In most states, restaurants can pay tipped staff a lower "tipped minimum wage" (the federal figure is $2.13 an hour), so tips make up most of a server's income. A few states, including California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Minnesota, Montana and Alaska, require the full minimum wage before tips.

Do You Tip on Tax? (Before or After Tax)

Etiquette guides agree that the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount: you're thanking the server for the food and service, not for the sales tax. On a $108.25 bill that includes $8.25 tax, a 20% tip is $20.00 (20% of $100), not $21.65. Turn on Tax rate % and pick your state, and the calculator works backwards from the receipt total to find the pre-tax amount for you. Tipping on the full total is never wrong; it's simply a little more generous.

Tipping When You Use a Coupon, Gift Card or Comped Item

If a coupon takes $10 off or the manager comps a dessert, your server still did the full amount of work. The polite rule is to tip on the original price, before the discount. Enter the discount under Tax, coupons, auto-gratuity & rounding and keep "Tip on the original price" ticked. The same goes for gift cards: they're a form of payment, so tip on the full bill.

Automatic Gratuity and Service Charges

Many restaurants add an automatic 18–20% gratuity for parties of six or more, and some add a "service charge" to every bill. Check the receipt before you tip, because it's easy to tip twice. Enter the charge in the calculator and it tells you how much extra (if any) brings the tip to the percentage you want. Note that a "service charge" doesn't always go to the server; if you're unsure, ask.

Split the Bill: Even or Uneven Splits

To split a bill evenly, set the number of people and the calculator divides the total, tip included. A $120 dinner with a 20% tip ($24) split four ways is $36 each. When one person had steak and cocktails and another had a salad, an even split isn't fair. Open Split unevenly, type each person's own items, and leave shared plates out. The calculator splits the leftover amount evenly and divides the tip and tax in proportion to what each person ate, so everyone pays their real share. Choose Round each person up for easy cash or Venmo amounts; the extra goes to the tip.

Tip Chart: How Much Is the Tip on $20 to $200?

The tip on common bill amounts at popular tip percentages. For example, a 20% tip on $50 is $10, on $60 is $12 and on $100 is $20; a 15% tip on $40 is $6.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 20% tip on $45 is 45 × 0.20 = $9, so the total is $54. Divide the total by the number of people to split it.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 18–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 15% for service that fell short and 20–25% for excellent service or large groups.

Do you tip on the total before or after tax?

Before tax is the etiquette standard, because the tip rewards the service rather than the sales tax. Tipping on the after-tax total is fine too; it just adds a little more.

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.00 and the total is $54.00.

How do you split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. For $120 with a 20% tip ($24) split 4 ways, each person pays $36. Use Split unevenly in the calculator when people ordered different amounts.

Should I tip on a discounted or comped meal?

Yes. Tip on the original price before the coupon, gift card or comped item, because your server did the same amount of work.

Do I need to tip if gratuity is already included?

No extra tip is expected when an automatic gratuity (often 18–20% for parties of six or more) is already on the bill, though you can add more for great service. Check the receipt so you don't tip twice.

How much do you tip for food delivery?

Etiquette guides suggest 10–15% of the order, and many people tip 15–20% on app orders such as DoorDash or Uber Eats, with at least $3–5 per delivery. Tip more for bad weather, long distances or large orders.

How much do you tip a hairdresser?

15–20% of the service price, split among everyone who worked on your hair. On a $60 haircut that's $9–12.

How much do you tip an Uber or Lyft driver?

15–20% of the fare, with a minimum of about $1, plus $1–2 per bag if the driver helps with luggage.

How much is a 20% tip on $50?

A 20% tip on $50 is $10, making the total $60. A 15% tip would be $7.50 and an 18% tip $9.

How much do you tip hotel housekeeping?

$2–5 per day, left every day with a note marked for housekeeping.
